Fires in the Amazon forest are mainly concentrated in a region know as the ¨Arc of deforestation¨. Many fires escape beyond their intended boundaries and spread into nearby forest. The objective of this study was to (1) understand the spatial relation between hotspot counts and land-use/land-cover change in the Brazilian Legal Amazônia and (2) investigate the potential of hotspots derived from NOAA-AVHRR satellite data to identify areas of high deforestation risk. Seventy-seven Landsat-TM scenes were selected as sample sites. These cover 90% of annual deforestation. Fire hotspot data were obtained from PROARCO and deforestation data from PRODES for 2002 and 2003. Correlation between total annual hotspots (summed daily counts) and deforestation was significant for each year (R = 0.73, R = 0.61; Pearson correlation coefficient). Hotspots for 2002 had an even stronger correlation with the total biannual increment in deforestation for 2002 and 2003 (R = 0.778).
